Of course it’s not all-work-and-no-play with Utah Backcountry
Volunteers. Our Wednesday group day-hike took us on a cross-country
excursion to the breathtaking Neon Canyon. This red rock side canyon of
the Escalante is a mellow stroll up a deep, cool, sandy wash
culminating in a huge pool at the base of a 75’ sculpted, magnificent
slickrock water fall. The unique beauty of this place becomes apparent
upon making water ripple patterns that are reflected onto the striped
sandstone bowl.

We are entering our ninth year as Escalante’s first locally based
professional guide service. Our commitment is to safely guide our
guests beyond the more accessible places (Spooky, Peekaboo, Big Horn,
etc.) and into the most remote, beautiful and pristine corners of the
Escalante region. Our Permits in the Grand Staircase Escalante National
Monument, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Box Death Hollow
Wilderness Area, San Rafael Swell and Dixie National Forest, allow us
to offer unparalleled off trail hiking, canyoneering and backpacking
opportunities to our guests.

Accessed by boat or trails, the Escalante River canyons draw visitors
to their cool, serene depths, their natural bridges and
arches—including Stevens Arch, the largest in Glen Canyon NRA, and
LaGorce Arch—and the relatively profuse flora and fauna of their
riverbanks.

Most of the Escalante River and its countless tributaries are within
the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and many of the side canyons
are best explored by boat as the lower 15 miles of the river are now
part of Lake Powell. The only road access to the area is through the
Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument; primarily via the
Hole-in-the-Rock road from the west. The upper reaches are crossed by
UT 12 and several side tracks, while the Wolverine Road (which joins
the Burr Trail) gives access to some canyons in the northeast, but the
southeast region adjoining the lake is completely unreachable by road -
the Waterpocket Fold forms a barrier to the east while the land is too
uneven to the north; this must be one of the most remote, least visited
areas of Utah.

The slot canyon must be the closest to an access road of any other in
the Escalante region and begins after just a couple of minutes walk
down the dry wash. It deepens in several steps, as level, sandy
passages are separated by moderate drops of up to 8 feet over
chokestones, all of which are relatively easily downclimbed. Quite soon
- after a few hundred meters - the smooth sandstone walls fall away and
the gulch opens out into a wide clear area then restarts in similar
fashion a short distance further. As before, boulders are wedged in the
canyon at intervals but now the passageways are narrower, sometimes
angled away from vertical, and there are several tight squeezes between
the easier sections so overall the going is quite strenuous.

The Northern half of the San Rafael Swell contains many unique
features, many more than can be listed here. Buckhorn Wash, accessed by
a graded dirt road passable for most vehicles, is a winding fairly
narrow canyon bordered on both sides by towering sandstone cliffs. The
Little Grand Canyon through which the San Rafael River runs. Cane Wash,
Upper and Lower Black Boxes, Mexican bend, Saddle Horse Canyon, Salt
Wash, Black Dragon Canyon, North and South Coal Wash etc... Many of
these sites are accessible by most two-wheel drive vehicles, all are
spectacular and well worth the effort to visit.

The Cathedral has become an icon for people who love Glen Canyon. They
describe it as one of the world's great treasures, a place so beautiful
and serene it has a spiritual transcendence. A paradise lost beneath
the waters of Lake Powell, but briefly re-emerged because extended
drought drastically lowered the lake's level. The New York Times
recently ran a long feature article on the Cathedral. There have also
been reports on ABC TV news, in National Geographic Adventure magazine
and in other national and local media.

Almost heaven, the Escalante is a vast area of fascinating canyons cut
into Navajo and Wingate Sandstone, with abundant arches, lush streams
and lovely vistas. It is quite a place, not the least for its vastness
and variety. Both single and multiple day adventures are possible,
thanks to steady supplies of beautiful water in many canyons. The
number of published technical thrash-fests are few; the number of
divine, incredible explorations high. The level of adventure is high -
please help keep it this way.

tubHub (often styled StubHub! ) is an online marketplace owned by eBay, which provides services for buyers and sellers of tickets for sports, concerts, theater and other live entertainment events.
